Chapter 9 Questions

46 comments:

  1. Ponyboy pretended to be proud of killing Bob when Tim asked him about the situation. Have you ever pretended to be proud of something when you weren’t? Why?

Explain what Johnny meant when he told Ponyboy to “stay gold.”

  2. I think what Johnny meant when he told Ponyboy to "stay gold", was he reffering to when Ponyboy was talking about the poem about how gold doesn't stay, and he was telling Ponyboy to keep being Ponyboy, and not changing. I think the author did a good job about doing a sort of call back to the poem and making those good last words for Johnny.

  3. I probably have pretended to be proud of something when I wasn't, but I can't remember a specific situation. I know for sure that I have, though.

  4. I think that when Johny said, "stay golden," he meant for Ponyboy to not fight anymore and be good to other people (the soc's) and to stay in a healthy condition physically and spiritually. That sounds kind've weird when you say it like that! Oh well. I agree with you, EV.

  5. Yes, I have pretended to be proud of something when I really wasn't. I think that I probably did it for about the same reason that Pony did it. Because of the person he was talking to. I think that if Pony had acted like he wasn't proud of killing Bob, even though he didn't actually kill him, that Tim probably would have smacked him or done something to him anyway. I guess, when I acted like I was proud, nobody would have hurt me, but I think it was the fear about how they would act to it if I had said it in a way that showed that I wasn't proud of it. So, maybe for some people, what other people think, do, or say doesn't matter at all. But honestly, even if you say it doesn't, I think that at some time, it bugs everybody. So, off of that, I think that at one time or another, you'll say something, but you'll say it in a way that's the opposite of how you really feel. Not in a sarcastic way, but truly. Just so that they won't go talking to everybody else, even if they wouldn't have if you had told the truth.

I agree with you on the part about Johnny telling Pony to stay golden; that was a nice way to put it.

  7. When Johnny tells Ponyboy to stay golden, I think he meant not to change from the way he is. That he was perfect and that he only needed to impress others by being himself. By not wanting to fight and looking at the sunsets. Johnny said that he figured out what the poem meant. He said it meant youth, that being gold was being young. Sometimes when people grow up, they lose their gold and don't pause to look at the sunset or smell the roses. That's all I've got to say.

  8. OR,

Great observation about adults often not taking the time to notice the simple things in life, such as a sunset or smelling the roses. I agree that when people grow up, they tend to be so occupied by their busy lifestyle that they miss the many simple pleasures or blessings in life. In that sense, I also hope that you all stay golden! Johnny had wisdom beyond his years : )

  9. Thank you CK, I think that Johnny was reffering to the poem because that poem reflected the book in a way so I thought the author did a good job of recalling that subtle detail.

  10. Hello Bloggers,
When Johnny tells Ponyboy to stay gold I think it means that Johnny wants Ponyboy to be himself to not change. To do what he wants and do want he pleases, whatever it takes for him to be happy. And if that means not fighting and just watching the sunsets, so-be-it.

Yes, I probably have pretended to be proud of something when I really wasn't. I don't exactly remember the specific situation but I probably did it because I just wanted to go with the flow, or I just didn't really think about the situation.

  15. When Johnny said that to Ponyboy I think he meant stay a good kid and don't become wreckless and useless because Ponyboy is smart and a nice kid and he shouldn't change into something that he isn't meant to be.

  20. Hey Peoples,
What I think he meant when he said "stay gold" was not to do anything dumb that would get him in jail. ANd like how they saved all those kids, he wants him to keep being a hero, and being the best he can be.

You said, "Johnny dies and the others in the gang go out to fight the Socs and the greasers win." Isn't it that they have the fight, then Dally drags Pony to the hospital where they tell Johnny they won then Jhonny dies? Because how you state it it sounds like Johnny dies then they fight.
    Sorry for questioning

  23. When Johnny says "stay golden" he is saying stay yourself, don't change your ways, don't become harden and fight when you don't have to, stay a kid as long as you can, and keep watching those sunsets. You know what I mean? AH talks about still being a hero, how can he still be a hero?

  26. I think what Johnny meant was that never to get down on yourself and always stay proud of everything you do. Never be ashamed of anythhing and do your best. That's what I would take from anyone that said that to me.

  28. Dear buddies,
I agree with Ev1207 when Johnny to "stay gold" he was referring to the poem and how gold doesn't stay. People just say that stuff because they want to sound tough. Except they truely regret about what they did. I'm sure that has happened to me once or twice. It will just eat at you until you just go to the limits.

  31. When Johnny said stay gold I thought he meant like stay how you are dont change, cherish every moment because you might end up like me soon, you be yourself and dont become like the other greasers and hoods, beleive that you can become what ever you want and dont hold back in what you believe in, strive to be the best, do everything to your best ability.

  33. B L O G G E R S,
I believe that when Johnny told Pony to stay "golden" he was referring it from the poem. I think he told him to stay golden because he wanted him to stay true to himself and be himself around other people as well. I don't think he was really looking at the "big picture", but instead he was worrying about who he was impressing. I agree with a lot of people's comments about this question.

  34. Outsiders,
I think we all sometimes act proud of a situations when we're really not. The people that you are with make you sometimes act different, in some cases Too proud. I know I have done it. You really don't feel that proud afterwards though. Sometimes I get the vibe that some people get so proud of themselves that no one else matters. It's usually a sad situation when it happens.

  35. Bloggers,
I really agree with what OR commented on the "golden" topic. I agree that some adults and children don't take the time to look at the simple things in life. How there are far more important things than material goods. I think we can all learn something from this poem!

I agree with you CK on your opinion of being proud of something you not. You really put it into great words. I think your right about the aftermath if he were to tell the truth he probably would have been fine too. I think we all need to start being ourselves and not acting like someone else.

  38. Yes, I have pretended to be proud of something I did but I really wasn't. I don't know why I did this, I guess it was maybe because it was cool or funny. Like sometimes I might make fun of someone and it is funny but when I say it out loud I feel bad, even though everyone else is laughing. I don't ever tell anyone that I feel bad about saying something mean, but that doesn't mean I don't feel bad inside. I think that if somebody stood up and told somebody that what they were doing or saying wasn't nice people wouldn't do it anymore. Like Bob acted like he was proud when he smoeked, drank, and stole but nobody ever told him not to.

  39. Dear Bloggers,
In my lifer I have done something that I wasn't proud of. I probably did this because I might have thought it was funny or I just thought it would make me cooler. I was wrong because it did not make me a cooler person at all. It made me want to go back in time and change what I did because it was not something that would have done in the first place. Every body knows me as a kindhearted person and not someone that would do anything top hurt anybodies feelings.

  40. Dear Bloggers,
What I think Johnny meant when he told Ponyboy "To Stay Golden" is that he should never change the kind of that he is. He also meant to never do wrong and to stay true. I think Ponyboy should never fight again i a rumble because he could die and he could get seriously hurt. Ponyboy should always care for his brothers as much as he cares for himself.

  42. Yo Bloggers,
When Johnny tells Ponyboy to stay golden, I think that means that Johnny knows Ponyboy is a good kid who gets good grades and he could maybe even get a scholarship. I think he said this for Ponyboy's own good so he can have a good life and not fight anybody anymore.

  45. Dear Bloggers,
When Johnny tells Ponyboy to stay gold I think he means to be smart and to not change. I also think that Johnny said one of his last words to Ponyboy because Ponyboy said that him and Johnny were good buddies. I wish Johnny didn't have to die, but I guess I am not the writer of this book and that is how she wanted the book to be. I wonder why the Socs and the greasers have to always fight. I wonder what the reason for why they always fight. Maybe because they want to show off to each other and if they win a fight that means they are better than that group or better than the person they beat up.

  46. Dear Bloggers,
I am answering question number two. When Johnny told Ponyboy to stay gold he was trying to tell him to not become a bum. He wants him to stay in school and don't kill any one like he did. He wants him to still go to church and not be hoodlum like the rest of the gang. He just wants him to stay a good kid and not let his town take a tole on him. Johnny knows that Ponyboy is good but he is worried he might turn into a bad kid.
