  1. Respond to one of the following questions:

*Describe the narrator's family. Be descriptive about each member's personality.

*Ponyboy discusses the differences between the Greasers and the Socs. Explain these differences using details from the novel.

  2. Ponyboy's family has some problems. Sodapop has the looks, but isn't to brainy. He has the girlfriend, Sandy, that he thinks he's going to marry after she and Pony get out of school. Darry is the tough guy. Always looking out for his kid-brothers. He's experienced more than he should have in his twenty years-thus the cold eyes. Pony's parents died in a car wreck. His dad was forty. We don't really know much about his mom right now though. Pony himself is scawny, the youngest of the gang, and has all the brains. He thinks that Darry doesn't care about him, but I think that in his own way he does. I think that the reason Darry is tough on Pony is to keep him going, keep him smart, keep him in touch.

  3. The Socs are different from the Greasers because the Socs are rich stuck up and snotty and will obviously do anything to anyone just for being there. I feel bad for the Greasers, not just Ponyboy, Soda, and Darry but for all of them because just walking home could kill you and I don't think that I child should have to worry about walking two blocks and getting jumped. Because that's all that really happens to Greasers. The Socs think that being the Greasers are small and poor that they could hurt them severely.

  4. Ck,
I agree with you when you say that Darry is only being tough on Ponyboy because he just wants to keep him strong, smart, and tough.

  5. The differences between the greasers and the
Soc's is that one is upper class and has the cash and thinks highly of themselves and the greasers are living at the other end of the scale and are potrayed as a gruff, gritty crowd which is a real steriotyped based comment on both accounts. It's kind of like in the days of Martin Luther King Jr. when the Whites were discriminating against the African Americans just because of their skin color, and in this case, the Soc's are discriminating and jumping the greasers because of where they grew up, what they look like, how they dress, and a long list of things that if reversed can be used as things that the greasers think about the Soc's.

  6. AB-
You make a good point when you say that a kid shouldn't have to worry about getting jumped when they're only walking two blocks back to their house. That's a lot of pressure. Then there's the fact that his parents just got killed and his brother yells at him and he feels like he can never make him happy. It'd be a hard life to lead.

  7. Ponyboy's family is just kids because their parents died. Darry works on roofing to make money and Soda dropped out of school and works at a gas station to help make some money. To me Ponyboy kind of seemed like a loner in the beginning of the book now he seems more out-going.

I think it would be a hard life to live if you can't walk 2 blocks without getting jumped.

    ReplyDelete
  9. MAM-
Wouldn't it though? I mean, if you can't walk two blocks, what's going to happen when you have to walk four? Five? Are you going to get killed? Are you going to end up like Johnny? It would be scary.

  10. I totally agree with you CK, I couldn't live like that, and a lot of people around the world do live like that and that's a really real thing. It makes me sort of sad to think that this is kind of what the world came to in this day and age, in some areas you get a pedicure and others you've got to dodge bullets. Makes you think, doesn't it?

The differences between the two groups are: The socs are rich snots, the greasers are poor routy boys.
The socs are neat and clean cut,
the greasers are dirty white boys with long greasy hair.
no hard feelings to either groups

  12. the difference between the soc's and the greases, are that the soc's are rich kids that gang up on greases and beat the living snot out of them, and the greases are the poorer people that get the snot beat out of them. The main character is a grease.

Ya, the whole jumped thing is a little disterbing. When I go outside where I live, all i worry about is getting too tired to make it all the way to my friends house. When I go to a big city my mom is constently looking to see if I am close to her, but ponyboy can't do that because he has no parents.
p.s. DID HIS PARENTS DIE FROM BEING BEETEN?

  15. I'd say the narrator is Ponyboy. He's the narrator because he's the main character. His family is difficult because his parents are dead. They died when their kids were young. Dallas is the oldest and the meanest. Everyone likes Soda, the second oldest. He has good looks and is constantly helpful. Ponyboy is the youngest he got hurt by the Socs just like Johnny. Dallas and Soda make the money while pony goes to school he's really smart. He skipped a grade.

  16. HEY Y'ALL,
I'm going to answer the question where it say's describe the narrator's family. Well, Ponyboy doesn't have a mom or dad because they died, so I'll talk about Sodapop and Darry. Well, Sodapop seems like the nice guy who is everyone's best friend and that he will always be there, and he understands everyone. He's my favorite charactar. Now Darry, is just like a worry wart. Like he wants Ponyboy to do really well in school and I think that he is just under a lot of stress by trying to keep their family together and from having to work all the time to pay the bills. Also, Darry is rough, even though he yells at Ponyboy I still think that he likes him because when he got beat up by the Socs. he was like shaking him and I bet he was scared!!!!! I would be scared but that's just me and Darry. Wow, this was really long.

  17. OOPS! I FORGOT PONYBOY WAS INCLUDED IN THE FAMILY!
Well, anyways, Ponyboy is really smart, I mean he skipped a grade like WHOA! He seems like he can be shy at times but at other times with people that he knows really well like Sodapop, I'm thinking he can be quite a chitter-chatter.

  19. The greasers are not at all the same as the socs. The socs are very rich. Greasers come from mostly poorer families. Socs always dress in dressier clothes. They also draw mustangs and coviers. Greasers have shirt tales sticing out. Greasers have very greasy hair and stick in packs.

  20. I'll tell ya how the narrator describes his family. Well first off ponyboy is the narrator. He says Sodapop is his favorite brother. His parents died in a freak accident so Darry is in charge. Darry is Ponyboy's other bro. Ponyboy doesn't like Darry very much though because he is always yelling at him. Ponyboy also says the pack is like his bros to.

  21. Dear internet dwellers,
I think that the socs and the greasers are different because socs are rich and greasers are not as rich. I don't like the greasers. I like the socs. Greasers are dirty and disgusting. They probably smell bad too. And why do they use switch blades and not handguns? They all must not be the brightest. This book should be called "The 1950 Gangsters. I don't like book. It belongs in a corner than on a bookshelf. We should be reading a good SCI-FI book. I never read anything that's not a SCI-FI book. But I have to read this book. :(

  22. Dear 7th graders,
The narrator's family is not very rich. I would say the live in the "bad" part of town. Ponyboy's mother and father both died. Now it is only the three brothers living together. The oldest brother works all the time. Ponyboy does not live him very much. Sodapop is the middle child. Ponyboy likes him the most. Ponyboy describes him as good looking and nice. Ponyboy is very smart but doesn't use his head when it comes to common sense.

  23. Dear fellow bloggers,
Ponyboy's family is just his two brothers because his parents died in a car accident. His older brother Darry is 20 years old and isn't very nice to Ponyboy. He is a hard working man and grew up to fast. He is hard and cold and his eyes are very cold. Sodapop is Ponyboy's other brother and he is his favorite brother and Ponyboy loves him more than he has ever loved someone else. Also Sodapop is very handsome like a "movie star." Ponyboy is just a 14 year old boy who is just trying to stay out of trouble. Well have good day!

  24. The difference between the socs and the greasers is the socs are bad people who live on the good part of town. The are rich and don't like greasers. The greasers are kids who live on the bad side of town and don't have very much money. They get "jumped" by the socs and most of them get into trouble a lot. They don't even do anything to the socs the socs just beat them up for enjoyment. Make good choices!

  25. Dear Bloggers,
The difference from the socs and the greasers are that the socs are rich snobs! They are very preppy and clean cut! They show there richness by buying expensive stuff. They rub it into the greasers face! The greasers are poor people! They grow long hair in the front so the can grease it up and flip it over! They can't afford hair cuts and they are low class. Mean while the socs are living life up and not worrying about anything, but there looks! Well I will blog to you all later!

  26. Hello Fellow Bloggers!!
Ponyboy's family is out of wack!!! Ponyboy is the smart one and the yougest one of the family. He seems to be the main main character. He is fourteen. Soda is the guy in the family who has the looks and isn't that smart. He is very hyper and a lot of energy! He is funny too. He is sixteen. Darry is the tough guy, who is very protective. He is like a father to the family because both of their parens died in a car crash I believe. He provides the money. Ponyboy doesn't have that great of a relationship with Darry, but he knows deep down Darry is only being hard on him becaus he wants him to be successful! Ponyboy is the tightest with Soda! Soda is really nice to Ponyboy and he always knows how to make him smile! Blog to you all later.

  28. Dear Bloggers,
Ponyboy's family is a poor family. Ponyboy is fourteen years old. He is the main character in this book. His family, which is Darry, and Sodapop are very different. Sodapop is sixteen years old, Darry is in his 20's. Each family member is very differnt. Sodapop is a dropout in school and works at the Station. Darry is hard and firm and doesn't smile. While Ponyboy is smart, (good grades)and likes to read books.

  30. What are some inferences you can make about the Socs or Greasers based on the details in the novel? Example: Based on what we've read in the novel so far, I can infer that the people in the community look favorably on the Socs and look down upon the Greasers. Editorials and articles are written in the newspaper about how the Socs are outstanding citizens, while the only place the Greasers are probably mentioned in the papers is in the Police Record section.

What inferences can you make about the Curtis boys based on the author's characterizations of them? Example: Although the book never came out and said this information, I can infer that Darry would probably be in a different career if his parents had not died. Darry was on the right track: doing well in school and athletics. He had aspirations to go on to college. If he did not feel obligated to take care of his brothers, I think he would have gone off to college and ended up with a successful career making good money.

Tell me some of the inferences you have made during this novel.

Ponyboys family is just him and his 2 brothers becuase his parents died in a car accident! Ponyboy is the youngest of all his brothers. He is fourteen. They have a big old family of Greasers! Greasers are a social group that have icky, long, greasy hair. They are dirty and poor. Their whole family has pretty weird names. There is Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry. I think that Ponyboy and Sodapop are just nicknames though. Darry is a little worry-wort. He always is making sure that his brothers aren't in any trouble! I like Sodapop because he is nice.

  33. Yo Bloggers,
The narrator is Ponyboy. His family is only his two brothers, Darryl or Darry and Sodapop or Soda. Darryl is sort of the dad but he is only twenty. He works a lot and he works for a roofing company. Sodapop dropped out of school and he works at a gas station sometimes. Darryl always yells at Ponyboy for everything but not Sodapop. Sodapop likes Ponyboy and Darry so he is sort of like a peace-maker.

The difference between the Socs and the Greasers is that from the Greasers' point of view, the Socs are stuck-up and get everything they want because of their income. I think they probably know that the Socs are not really like this but they just think that because they always beat the Greasers up. I would probably think that if I were the Greasers!

The difference between the Greasers and the Socs is the Socs live in the nice, pretty part of town. They are rich and snotty about it. They do not get along with the Greasers. The Greasers are a group of tough and rugged gang that live on the not so rich area of town. They get into fights with the Socs. They don't have alot of money, but they stick up for their family and friends. They seem very close.

  37. Ponyboy's family is just him and his brothers Darry and Sodapop. Darry is kind of a work aholic because he is always working. Sodapop is kind of a free go lucky guy. He plans on marrying his girlfriend Sandy as soon as he gets out of school and gets a better job. Ponyboy is 14 years old and he is the youngest of the group his brothers belong to. They all belong to a family of Greasers. Greasers are the hood of where they live. They are poor and can't get hair cuts so they grease their hair back (thats where they got the name!) They are enemies with the Socs (socials) the socs are the rich kids and they like to beat up on the the Greasers!

  38. Dear fellow outsiders,
The narrator's family is: Ponyboy the main character that is quiet and nice, Sodapop who is the main character's brother which is happy and cute all the time, Darry who is the main character's older brother who is serious and kind of mean, and his mom and dad died in a car accident. Ponyboy is a very normal, quiet, shy person who doesn't want trouble. Soda is a sweet boy who dropped out of school who is very nice and is cute. Darry is the working man who is tough and always serious. They take care of each other because their parents were killed in a accident. So they are greasers now.

  40. Dear Peeps in outsiders,
The difference between socs and greasers to Ponyboy is the socs are rich, fancy, schooled, kids who get whatever they want. Greasers are people who are poor, people who are in gangs, and people who live on a certain side of the tracks. Ponyboy is kind of scared of them because one of his friends got really beat-up by them. Ponyboy also got jumped by them and almost was killed by standing up for what is right. If I were Ponyboy I would have been scared to death.

  43. The narrator's family starts off with Ponyboy which is the narrator basically and he's about 15ish somewhere around there and he says he's one of the least toughest in his gang. But he does beat the Socs up sometimes. Next there's Sodapop which he's basically the party/most fun of the three in his family and he's mostly one of the toughest in his gang. Then there's Darry who is really tough, strong, mean, and sort of bossy. But that's because he is the oldest and has to take care of the other two because his parents are dead.

  45. Dear all my fellow bloggers, peoples,an Outsiders readers,
There are three differences between the Greasers and the Socs.
1.They act different- The Socs have a choice to fight or not to fight, to look for trouble of not to look for trouble, and they are a bit full of themselves. While the Greasers get jumped all the time and have to fight, they don't have to look for trouble but trouble still finds them. The Socs only fight if their is a lot of them agaist one or two, the Greasers fight no matter how many there are.
2.They look different- The Socs wear good clothes, they have short hair, and they ride around in a good car. The greasers have long greasy hair, wear raggy clothes, and walk or ride bad cars.
3.Money- The Socs have a lot of money. The Greasers have very little money and have to work really hard to get money.
